RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
