The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday commercial created using AI after facing significant criticism on social media.

The short spot was created with the help of AI video tools and was initially published publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Removal

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media denounced the implementation of AI in the film. Many called it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This experience is an important lesson as we explore the effective application of generative technology," stated a representative from the company.

The commercial was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed various scenarios that might go awry over the festive season, under the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Movement of AI Commercials

Commercials that incorporate generative AI have emerged as a growing phenomenon among prominent corporations, especially for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has also released consecutive AI-created holiday commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: As clips made using current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked worries about the replacement of human roles in the advertising industry, with some critics noting it could negatively impact opportunities for actors.

Response from the Production Company

After the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

She stated, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then edited afterward "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".

"This was not an AI gimmick," she said. "It was a film."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly panned, the reception for other AI-assisted campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday ad from Coca-Cola reportedly garnered a significant "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, various brands have likewise received backlash for using AI in their campaigns. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The situation highlights the evolving debate within the marketing and production sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
